Looking at the apps, games are still the more popular genres of applications to download and Angry Birds still dominates. Furthermore, Facebook retains its position as number one free app for the iPhone.

iOS App Store hits 25 billlion downloads

Apple's download the 25 billionth app from the iOS App Store contest has come to a close, which means the iOS App Store has officially reached 25 billion downloads. The winner of the contest has not been named, yet, but some lucky girl or guy out there has a $10,000 (approx Rs.4,92,700) gift certificate to the iTunes Store to her or his name. According to Redmond Pie, this confirms that the iOS App Store is currently the biggest hub for mobile applications. Apple made the announcement on its website with a banner reading, “A billion thanks. 25 times over. The App Store has reached 25 billion downloads. Thanks for getting us there.” The winner can spend the winnings on apps, music or books from Apple's online stores.

The contest began on the 13th of February and was set to end whenever the 25th billion app was downloaded from the App Store or the receipt of the non-purchase entry after the download of the 24,999,999,999th app, whichever came first. Contestants entered the race, either by downloading apps or by filling out a form online on the Apple website, which served as a non-purchase method. Last year in July, the iOS App Store crossed 15 billion downloaded applications. To compare notes, the Android Market has sold 11 billion apps and BlackBerry's App World has sold 2 billion apps. On the 18th of February, the download ticker clocked 24.328 billion apps and two weeks later, the contest target was met. According to The Next Web, this means that an average of 48.6 million applications were downloaded per day.

Apple becomes third-largest Mobile Manufacturer

SAN FRANCISCO: An outbreak of iPhone fever made Apple the third hottest mobile phone maker worldwide at the end of 2011, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Apple jumped into the third spot globally from fifth place in the final quarter of the year due to a record-breaking quarter for iPhone shipments, IDC said in figures available online Monday.

Apple vaulted over South Korea's LG and China based ZTE in the mobile phone market rankings, IDC said.

Nokia remained king, shipping 113.5 million mobile phones in the final quarter of the year to claim nearly 27 per cent of the market.

Samsung was second with 22.8 per cent of the market, or 97.6 million handsets shipped.

Apple sold 37.04 million iPhones in the quarter which ended on December 31, giving it a market share of 8.7 percent.

A total of 427.4 million mobile phones were shipped in the final months of 2011 in a 6.1 percent increase from the same quarter a year earlier, IDC said.

IDC warned that the growth rate in the fourth quarter of 2011 was weaker than the 9.3 percent seen in the prior three-month period of the year.

"The mobile phone market exhibited unusually low growth last quarter, which shows it is not immune to weaker macroeconomic conditions worldwide," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker.

"The introduction of high-growth products such as the iPhone 4S, which shipped in the fourth quarter, bolstered smartphone growth," he said.

"Yet overall market growth fell to its lowest point since the third quarter of 2009 when the global economic recession was in full bloom."

Forget PIN Numbers, Apple Wants to Let You Unlock Your iPhone With Your Face

Currently, if you have a passcode for your iPhone, it's the one where you have to unlock it by typing in a code. However, according to ReadWriteWeb, Apple now wants to simplify your life and have you unlock your iPhones with your face. While the feature is already available on jailbroken phones, Apple has filed a patent to make it available on every iPhone. The way the feature would work is pretty self explanatory. You pick up your locked iPhone, place it a few inches away from your face (with the front camera viewing your face, of course) and once approved, your iPhone is unlocked.

This feature is already available on Android phones with Ice Cream Sandwich with Face Unlock as well as Nokia phones running Symbian 3 and higher. However, as noted in the case of Android phones, the feature is not entirely secure, because it can unlock phones using photos of the "password face". However, Apple is reportedly working on the technology to combat this issue. The feature would use a  two-dimensional analysis of the way facial features are placed. It would also check skin tone and cross-check those details against "target images" that were previously captured by the device.

Now, own an iPhone for Rs 3,000

You can get an iPhone for free! No, this isn't one of those scams that abound on the Internet. We are talking about the new schemes that are being launched by telecom firms to push up smartphone usage. More importantly, these will help you get one of the costliest phones in India for around half its price, or even free in some cases.
There are various other phones that can be snapped up at high discounts, like Huawei's ID 280, which is being offered by Idea at half its price, while MTS is giving the HTC Pulse for virtually nothing.

The catch is that you have to stay with the telecom network for a fixed period of time. Such schemes are referred to as reverse subsidy options.

This new business model is the exact opposite of the one in the West, where carriers offer subsidised handsets to customers, along with specific plans, for an extended period of up to three years. Some carriers also charge a hefty fee if these contracts are cancelled before the due date.

For instance, AT&T charges $199.99 (Rs 10,550) for iPhone 4S, but customers have to commit to a minimum of $15 (Rs 791) and $20 (Rs 1,055) for monthly data and messaging plans, respectively, for two years.
However, this model is not sustainable in India due to various reasons-the carriers have to pay a revenue share on bundled handsets, contracts cannot be enforced as they are not legal, and recovery of phones or getting the money back from the consumer is not easy because subsidised phones are not linked to customers' bank accounts or credit rating. Here, the conditions favour consumers, setting them free of any liability.

Facebook for Android passes Facebook for iPhone

Facebook for Android has finally passes Facebook for iPhone in daily active users (DAU). The two were more or less tied head-to-head this week, but today the Android app has 58.8 million DAU while the iPhone app has 57.6 million DAU, according to AppData (1, 2). Put another way, the most popular app on Android is now more popular than the most popular app on iPhone.

Facebook for Android still has fewer monthly active users (MAU) than Facebook for iPhone: 86.1 million versus 99.5 million, respectively. On the flipside, this means a larger percentage of Android users are returning to use the app daily (68.3 percent) compared to iPhone users (57.9 percent). In other words, of the Android and iPhone users who have the official Facebook app, the former uses it more frequently than the latter.

The iPhone was first released in July 2008. More than a year later, the Android app followed with its first version in September 2009. Ever since, Android has been slowly trying to catch the iPhone version, but it’s taken a while: over two years.

Unlike other platforms, Facebook develops the apps for iOS and Android. For iOS, Facebook has long-supported the iPhone and iPod touch, and only started supporting the iPad two months ago. For Android, Facebook is currently only supporting smartphones and has said nothing about tablets.

Android users often complain about the state of the Facebook app, although it is getting better. Now that the Android version is eclipsing its iPhone counterpart, maybe Facebook will devote more development resources towards it.

Until recently, the iPhone version would get a feature first, and only much later would the Android app get it as well. This month is the first time that I remember Android getting a feature first: Mobile Timeline. Android got it earlier this week and iPhone got it today. Is this a new trend Android users can start to expect?

Facebook Rolls Out Timeline for Android First, Not iOS

Facebook pushed out its new Timeline feature Thursday. The long-awaited profile revamp, which arranges each user’s photos, posts and personal milestones chronologically, is now available to all users on its network for the first time since it was announced months ago.

Thursday’s rollout includes a version of Timeline for one of the major mobile platforms — but not the one you’d think.

Facebook is releasing Timeline to Android-based smartphones first, forcing iPhone and iPad users to wait.

Most of the features on the Android version of Timeline aren’t all that different from the browser version. Both include major cover photos that act as headers on the page, both depict map screenshots upon checking in to locations, and both give shared photos a more prominent position in your stream.

What’s odd, however, is the company’s decision to go with Android first. It’s almost an unspoken law of the Valley that if you’re planning to launch a new app, you start with Apple’s software first. Reasons include the ease of coding for a handful of fixed screen sizes — namely the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad — and the notion that a launch in the App Store causes a bigger stir than a launch in the Android Market.

And based on our conversations with programmers, we’ve been told that it’s just plain easier to develop for iOS given the toolsets provided, compared to what Google gives Android coders (though we can’t say either way).

Facebook, however, certainly isn’t hung up on monetizing its app, and considering it’s kept its Android app current while many other companies haven’t even launched non-iOS versions of their software, it’s not as if Facebook is struggling with Google’s developer tools or the myriad Android device screen sizes.

So why choose to go with Android first? Perhaps the company wants to target Google’s gigantic user base first. Or maybe Facebook just wants to switch it up to keep things fresh.

Fret not, Apple devotees. We’re sure iOS updates aren’t far behind. Today’s victory, however, goes to Android.

Moneysupermarket.com car insurance – Consumer app of the week

By: Created by Mobile Interactive Group for Moneysupermarket.com

Price: Free

Available on: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, (Android tbc)

What is it?

An app to compare quotes and purchase car insurance.

What does it promise?

"Compare accurate quotes from a huge range of car insurance providers and then purchase straight from your phone – all in a matter of minutes. You can switch your insurance in just 3 taps."

How does it work?

When you first use the app you need to make more than three taps as you need to register your personal details. Then, unless you're accessing a previous search, you need to fill in all the usual (often boring) details: make and age of car, usage, personal details, additional drivers etc. Once you've done this, the app provides you with a list of quotes which you can go on to purchase by ringing through to the insurer or connecting to its website.

Is it easy to use?

Yes. It might take a while to set up your initial details but after that it's a breeze. The app allows you to flip quickly between monthly and annual premiums, which is a really useful way of seeing the savings you can make by paying upfront. You can also easily tweak the type and level of cover you need (eg change any voluntary excess).

When I searched for insurance on my car, I obtained quotes ranging from around £300 (Sheila's Wheels, since you ask) to £1,900 (from a firm called HY-performance, which has little chance of attracting my custom based on that quote). You can add searches as well as store and tweak previous ones.

Is it pretty?

It's functional rather than beautiful, but consistent colour-coding and good definition of clickable buttons helps users navigate effectively.

Is it fun?

I'm not sure "fun" is the word to describe obtaining on-the-go insurance quotes, but it's certainly handy.

Should you download it?

A slight quibble is that the app displays a lot of information about policies, but not the actual policy details or terms and conditions; and some consumers may wish to obtain quotes from insurers not on the Moneysupermarket.com platform (it claims to compare prices from more than 100 insurers). The app may also benefit from putting some of the useful guides that appear on the website, on the app.

But minor drawbacks aside, this is an undeniably useful app. If you are car-hunting and see a car in a garage forecourt or for sale privately, you can quickly see if the insurance would make it prohibitively expensive to own.

iPhone 5 : The Rumours

It's July, there is no new iPhone, and the analysts are restless. This time last year, Apple had already announced and begun shipping the iPhone 4 -- in fact, every single previous model has been announced in June, save for the first, which was unveiled in January 2007. So, now that the month has come and gone and WWDC with it, what are all of the tech publications out there to do? Make with the rumor stories, naturally -- and over the past few weeks, they've been coming fast and furious.

DigiTimes has offered a fairly constant stream of sometimes dubious rumors surrounding the device from its stable of supplier contacts, and a recent article from The Wall Street Journal has reopened the floodgates. GigaOm has gone so far as to suggest that the latter may well be a controlled leak from Apple, and certainly it has reignited interest in the belated device.

There's not a lot in the way consensus here, save for one key detail: Apple appears set to release a new iPhone. That much seems certain. After all, the iPhone remains the company's biggest money maker, even in this post-iPad world. Last year, of course, we had a slightly better guide ahead of the launch, but this time out, for better or worse, no one at Cupertino has been considerate enough to leave the upcoming handset at a Redwood City bar after a night of partying, so let's cut through the noise and and piece together a cohesive picture based on the wide assortment of rumors.

Name: at least it'll have "iPhone" in there somewhere

While Apple has traditionally released the iPhone on a fairly consistent schedule, the new device's name has always been a bit harder to predict -- the iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4. The two primary candidates here are the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, both of which are being used mostly interchangeably in rumor stories about the device, though the latter seems the more popular option. The iPhone 4S moniker has been used to refer both to the flagship iPhone 4 successor and a slight revamp to that handset to be released alongside an iPhone 5 at a lower price point, perhaps targeted primarily toward pre-paid customers.

Announcement:

With June come and gone, there's an "any day now" vibe amongst tech sites. Back in June, BGR cited a source suggesting that an iPhone event in early or mid-August was "quite possible." Most rumors, however, point to a September event, perhaps coinciding with the iPod unveiling traditionally held that month. Many of those September rumors are coming courtesy of supply sources offering up a wide spectrum of shipment numbers -- "a few million" at launch and 25 million by year's end, according to one and 15 million at release, according to another. DigiTimes, a few days before offering up the 15 million number, cited sources suggesting a shipment of "millions" for an October release.

All of which prompts the question of why Apple missed the June cutoff? Production problems seem to be the primary culprit, according to the majority of the rumors we've seen. The Wall Street Journal is blaming a problem with the production rate at iPhone assembler, Hon Hai Precision Co., which may delay the phone's launch even further if not improved. A rep from Hon Hai suggested last month that production issues were due, in part, to the difficulty of installing components in thin touchscreen devices. OmniVision is reportedly having some troubles producing the camera for the upcoming version of the iPhone, as well. Word is that such an issue may jeopardize its relationship with the oft fickle Apple.

Hardware: totally the same, yet completely different

Just how different would a new iPhone be? That, not surprisingly, is the subject of much debate as well. Apple has certainly seen the competition stepping up its game, with handsets like the Droid Bionic, HTC Sensation, and Galaxy S II, so staying on top may mean some serious upgrades in this latest version. That said, a number of outlets are reporting that the new iPhone may be a minor upgrade to the iPhone 4, perhaps with a few small cosmetic changes.

Most sources are pointing to some updates to the device's design, including an edge-to-edge screen, upsetting bezel diehards everywhere. Many also expect that the latest version of the handset will be both thinner and lighter than its predecessor -- not a radical suggestion, by any stretch. One analyst is predicting a return to the curved back that went away with the iPhone 3GS, but that's nothing compared to the bizarre teardrop design that we saw back in April. A month later, it was reported that Apple had purchased hundreds of glass cutting machines to created an iPhone with a curved glass front.

As for the innards of the thing, The Wall Street Journal was tipped off on the possibility of a full switch from Infineon chips to Qualcomm by one of its endless line of anonymous sources. A camera upgrade seems like a no-brainer, meanwhile, with the megapixel count on the rear of the device getting bumped up to eight, along with a sensor better equipped to handle low-light conditions. Back in June, a dual-LED flash was also added to the list of potential upgrades.

And what about LTE? It's been floated as a possibility, of course, as has NFC, but these features seem largely the musing of analysts creating a laundry list of ways Apple can remain competitive. Verizon's own comments haven't been particularly encouraging in the case of the former. The carrier's CFO did, however, make mention of a "global device."

The carriers:

AT&T, check. Verizon, check. Both providers are apparently getting the device at the same time. And hey, since the multiple US carrier floodgates have already been opened, why not add Sprint to the list? The wireless provider is being pegged as the next recipient of Apple's beloved smartphone, with an analyst predicting that it will be happily receiving it before the holidays roll around. The handset is said to be priced the same, but may have a leg up on the competition with lower-priced data offerings. T-Mobile, naturally, has been suggested as a possibility as well, but given recent events, that could soon be rendered moot.

Wildcards:

Have you heard the one where Apple releases the next version of the iPad at the same time as the new iPhone? That rumor's been pretty persistent since before the release of the iPad 2, and hey, it would certainly help the company get a jump on paying for that giant new spaceship campus the Cupertino City Council seems so excited about.

And what about the iPhone 6? The Wall Street Journal is predicting big things for that one -- seemingly lending credence to the rumor that the 2011 release won't be a major upgrade.
